Meet the Sound Provider: JACEWON
Jacewon is a Chicago-born, SoCal-raised hip-hop artist who seamlessly moves between roles as AN MC, DJ, and producer. Since the 90s, he has shared stages with KRS-ONE, De La Soul, Mos Def, Method Man, AND MANY MORE.
His artistic journey began with a Run-DMC cassette in 1985 and developed through his time AS THE MUSIC LIBRARIAN at KKBT 92.3FM The Beat Los Angeles IN THE LATE 90S, AND HIS TIME AS A CLUB DJ THROUGHOUT LA AND OC IN THE 2000s.
How did you get into DJing and what inspired you to pursue it as a career? It was 1991 and the big homie on our block was known for DJing and I would always help him carry his crate to the car when he had a gig. One day he asked if I’d like to roll with him and I did. I learned a lot that night. I’ve been obsessed with playing and creating music for people ever since.
What is the story behind your DJ name and how did you come up with it? I started battle rapping around South LA and North OC in the 90s. I went by Kasual/Kas back then, but my name’s Jace...so the crew I rolled with would chant “JACE WON, JACE WON,” after cyphers and it stuck. It’s not the best name to have when you lose though, I’ll tell you what.
Did you have any specific influences that shaped your sound? I grew up with folk, rock, and soul music at the crib. Being a latchkey kid, radio and TV raised me when my parents weren’t there. Live and syndicated shows from Wolfman Jack and Art Laboe became my early studies for radio. I loved how their voices cut through the music and commanded attention. As far as my own music goes, I paid a lot of attention to storytellers like Slick Rick and Special Ed, and then as I came of age, Cube, Redman, and Common because of their vocal tone and storytelling.
What is your most memorable DJ set that you have played so far? I had a residency at the old Palace nightclub in Hollywood back in 2001 (I think it’s called Avalon now?) and my job was to hold down the terrace with chill hip-hop and soul joints while the main floor was pumpin' out high-energy EDM. One of the nights Jessica Alba was there with some friends and after my set she bought me a drink and thanked me for giving her a place to escape the madness for a bit. No, I didn’t get her number.
Do you have any exciting projects on the horizon? Yes! I just released an album called “The Human Experience.” I wrote, performed, and produced all of the songs. It’s my first full-length project since 2019 so I’m pretty excited about it. The homies have said it was like listening to a Netflix series. It’s a very cinematic and thought provoking project.
